The project spans across a picturesque construction site nestled within a park, not far from the high-quality historical building ensemble in the municipality of Eppan on the Wine Road. The property, dating back to the 60s and originally built by an industrialist, is protected as part of the ensemble and has been exemplary reclaimed and energetically upgraded by Andreas Gruber Architects.
The distinctive elements of the villa, including the characteristic natural stone cladding and nods to the 60s such as a curtain facade, are carefully preserved. Facades of secondary importance are opened up towards the park with generous glass surfaces, creating a special quality within the building.
The construction intervention also includes an expansion of the existing structure, providing rooms for the children of the owners. The elongated structure, harmoniously connected to the existing building, encloses a swimming pool and seamlessly integrates into the idyllic surroundings. The pool serves as both a communication and meeting place within the overall concept. The extension is slightly offset in height from the existing structure, preserving its significance as the defining main house.
The materialization of the extension is inspired by the natural environment, deliberately incorporating the stratification of the soil from the surrounding vineyards. Consequently, the facade is made of rammed concrete, engaging in a dialogue with the existing building and the surroundings. The robust walls give the building a cooling effect, especially during the summer months.
The construction project presents itself as a successful synthesis of proven elements from the past and contemporary, efficient architectural solutions. The integration into the landscape and consideration for the historical surroundings make this family estate a unique and sustainable living space.
